The V series has been Vivo’s top mid-range offering in India. Over the past couple of months, the company has been releasing a number of devices under the V20 lineup. The latest to land in consumer’s hands is the Vivo V20 Pro, which takes over from the V20 (review) and V20 SE (review). Priced at Rs 29,990, the device is aimed squarely at the likes of the OnePlus Nord (review) and the Realme X3 series. Whether the Vivo V20 Pro is a viable alternative happens to be a question for the full review. For now, here is an unboxing and first impressions of the phone.
Opening the packaging of the Vivo V20 Pro is a pretty standard experience, but the company does provide quite a few accessories along with the phone. On the top is a separate compartment that holds the clear silicone case and the Type-C to micro-USB charging cable. The phone sits underneath it and below that you can find the charging adapter, standard paperwork, a pair of earphones, and a Type C to 3.5mm adapter.
The Vivo V20 Pro has all the design features of the previous V20 phones including the AG Matte Glass finish, which I had appreciated in my review of its sibling. This also includes the substantially thin chassis and featherweight in-hand feel. The V20 Pro’s resemblance with the V20 is striking from the back thanks to the unusual triple-camera setup on the top left. I have received the Mid-Night Jazz colour variant that blends in two subtle shades of grey in a soothing gradient finish. Vivo packs in the same 6.4-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel that is present in the other two V20 phones. There’s no high screen refresh rate on the Pro version but there is an additional selfie shooter housed in a small notch at the top. More on both the design and display in the full review.
On the optics side, a higher resolution 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GW1 sensor handles the primary photo-taking capabilities. It is supported by an 8MP ultra-wide lens which doubles as a macro shooter and a 2MP mono sensor. On the front, the dual selfie cameras consist of a primary 44MP sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide lens. Eye-tracking, auto-focus, and other front camera features present on the V20 also make their way to the Pro version. The additional ultra-wide on the front has a 105-degree field of view to accommodate more in the frame. Full camera analysis will be discussed in the review.
Powering the phone is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G SoC with 5G capabilities. There is only one variant of the phone offering 8GB RAM and 128GB of non-expandable UFS 2.1 storage. I expect that all the usual multi-tasking capabilities, app switching, and running fairly heavy-duty apps should not be a problem on the V20 Pro. Game Turbo and a vapour chamber for cooling should help in running titles such Call of Duty Mobile and other graphically intensive games. I will know for sure as I take it through a full review, so stay tuned. Vivo is shipping the V20 Pro with the latest FunTouch OS 11 which is based on Android 11. The ensemble is backed by a comparatively smaller 4,000mAh battery. However, the phone has Vivo’s proprietary 33W FlashCharge solution that is said to juice up 65 percent of the battery in 30 minutes.
All-in-all, the Vivo V20 Pro looks like a pretty decent package, at least on paper. At Rs 29,990, the V20 Pro has several devices in its crosshairs like the OnePlus Nord, Galaxy A71 (review), and the Realme X3 Superzoom (review).
